Turning the tide on rare Disease Diagnosis

Why you need to hear the story of Tin Soldiers

I was recently approached by the founder of Tin Soldiers, and after hearing her story, I realised there was only one possible response: this is a message that needs to be shared.

As someone who works closely with partners across different sectors, I’ve learned that real impact often starts with awareness. Tin Soldiers is a powerful example of how knowledge (or the lack of it) can change the course of a life. After understanding their mission and the urgency behind it, we felt a responsibility to help amplify their work within our network.

Turning the tide on rare Disease Diagnosis

Tin Soldiers was born out of a documentary film that followed individuals living with Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP), one of the rarest genetic diseases in the world. FOP causes muscles and connective tissues to gradually turn into bone, severely restricting movement over time.

What makes this condition especially heartbreaking is not just its rarity, but the fact that FOP is relatively easy to diagnose , if medical professionals know what to look for. There are clear early indicators that, when recognised in time, allow patients to receive appropriate guidance and care. Early diagnosis can slow, stop, or in some cases even halt the progression of the disease, dramatically improving quality of life.

Yet across the globe, many patients remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years. The consequences of that delay can be irreversible.

The Mission of Tin Soldiers

Out of this reality grew Tin Soldiers Global, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to finding undiagnosed patients with FOP and other rare musculoskeletal conditions. Their mission is twofold:

  • To actively search for patients who have been missed by the healthcare system
  • To educate medical professionals by teaching them the simple diagnostic checks that can prevent lifelong damage

Tin Soldiers works with clinicians, researchers, and healthcare networks worldwide to ensure that rare no longer means invisible. Their approach combines patient search, medical education, and powerful storytelling, because awareness saves lives.

Why Education Is the Key

One of the most striking parts of the founder’s story was this: FOP does not have to be a lifelong sentence. When doctors are trained to recognise the early signs, patients can avoid harmful procedures, receive the right care sooner, and maintain a far better quality of life.

That is why the core mission of Tin Soldiers is education. By equipping healthcare professionals with the right knowledge today, they are working toward a future where children born with FOP are diagnosed early, and where the disease no longer defines their entire lives.

Why We’re Sharing This With Our Partners

After hearing this story, it became clear that Tin Soldiers’ mission aligns deeply with our values. Change does not happen in isolation. It happens when organisations, partners, and communities choose to share important knowledge and support initiatives that truly matter.

By sharing the story of Tin Soldiers with our partners, we hope to contribute, even in a small way, to a future where rare diseases are recognised sooner, treated better, and no longer ignored.

Because sometimes, spreading the right story at the right time can change everything.
